The Swahili Jazz Band carries coastal rhythm, Swahili poetic lyrics and jazz improvisation through saxophone-led arrangements. The band describes its music as layered with vibrant vocals, earthy rhythms and sophisticated but folkloric songs.

Its music draws from Mijikenda traditions, Bango lineage, taarab melodic spirit and the improvising language of jazz.
